Healthy Learners is a school linked program that addresses focusing on the "whole health" of the child with the belief that physical, psychological and emotional well being are all a part of high academic achievement. South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Inez Tenenbaum affirmed this belief when she stated, "A study conducted found that there is a missing key in southern school districts; there is not enough focus on the "whole health" of a child when considering his or her academic performance." As we care for our community"s children, we must consider the "whole child" and how unmet health needs affect their academic performance and potential. Healthy Learners seeks to remove these health barriers to learning and to meet the health needs of South Carolina school children.
The purpose of Healthy Learners is, and always has been, to meet the health needs of children and youth who would otherwise not receive adequate access to health care services. These children are from families who have no means of funding for health care; they are uninsured or underinsured and do not have private pay capability.
