Healthy Learners began serving the students of Greenwood School District 50 in the fall of 2005. The program serves financially disadvantaged elementary, middle and high school students who are either uninsured or underinsured. This includes students who are covered by Medicaid. Transportation to and from school to appointments is a unique and vital link to the success of the Healthy Learners program.

Lack of transportation is a concern for families and uninsured and underinsured children are often unable to meet the financial obligations of health care and the cost of prescription medication. Approximately 40% of the students in the Greenwood area are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free/reduced lunch. The majority of these children will qualify for assistance from Healthy Learners. Also, in Greenwood, 70% of the children seen in the emergency care centers have non-emergent needs and that percentage is higher than the state average of 56%. This is an indication that too many children lack routine access to care to a primary medical home. The Healthy Learners staff is committed to helping to establish medical homes for these children.
