Healthy Learners began serving the students of Allendale County in the fall of 2005. The program serves financially disadvantaged elementary, middle and high school students who are either uninsured or underinsured. This includes students who are covered by Medicaid. Transportation to and from school to appointments is a unique and vital link to the success of the Healthy Learners program.

The numbers of families in Allendale County who will benefit from Healthy Learners is great. Allendale County ranks number one in South Carolina for families living below the federal poverty level and 50% of Allendale residents are enrolled in Medicaid. The transportation segment of Healthy Learners is critical to Allendale families, without it, many children would not have access to care or medical treatment. Healthy Learners Allendale will provide families with the assistance they need to meet their children's health needs and improve school performance by removing health barriers to learning
